‘Page 119’ Book, Masking Tape, Postcard, Acrylic Case, Poem, 22.2*27.3*4.5 cm, 2023
This year (2023) I moved into a new house. While I was organizing my bookshelf, this book ‘The Curtain Rain’ caught my attention with its bookmark almost dropping out. The bookmark was a postcard from Jeju Island, and as I stared at it for quite a while, the memory of this book and how the postcard ended up lying on the page of 119 started to resurface…

This year (2023) I did a month long residency in Chiang Dao. During my stay I visited Arunothai couple times and was introduced to the history background of the place. Like the Kuomintang that withdrawn from China to Taiwan in 1949, the massive group of people are now living in Arunothai for the same reason. With the use of the same language (Mandarine) and eating the very similar food I get in Taiwan, there’s a strong feeling of how time and space have overlapped. A line from the movie ‘Paradise in Service’ that has stuck in my mind for a long long time resurfaced as I was there at Arunothai : 你這輩子再也回不去了(Nǐ zhè bèizi zài yě huí bù qùle), meaning ‘you can never go back in this life’.

This series of paintings by Lydia was created during her residency in Chiang Dao,Thailand.
Each piece combines three landscape paintings with subtitles from Marriage Story (2019). Serving as a diary of her time there, the works reflect the contrast between the peaceful rural scenery she woke up to each day and her personal struggles with a failing relationship. By referencing the film’s intense fight scenes, Lydia captures the dissonance of being immersed in a joyful travel experience while anticipating an inevitable heartbreak.
